Trial and Error: What Popular Media Gets Wrong About Trials

Trial and Error: What Popular Media Gets Wrong About Trials

Join the Witkin State Law Library for a live webinar titled "Trial and Error: What Popular Media Gets Wrong About Trials" on Wednesday, October 15, at 12 PM!

“You can’t handle the truth!” Such refrains are the reality of courtroom drama. Or are they? Popular media—TV, movies, and books—portrays the life of a lawyer as one constantly in trial where they routinely exchange verbal barbs and spring surprise witnesses on their opponents. But is that what trial is really like? Is that even what being a lawyer is really like? This talk will discuss some of the major myths in popular culture about trials and give a peek into the true practice of law. Hopefully you can handle the truth.

Conner Johnston is an attorney that has had experience in nearly every type of legal practice. He currently is a Senior Appellate Attorney with the Third Appellate District where he has helped justices review hundreds of civil and criminal appeals on many different legal issues, and many of these cases are appealed after a trial. Before joining the court, Conner worked as an attorney in private practice at firms big and small in both transactional and litigation practice, including preparing cases for trial and arguing motions in court. Conner is presenting on his own behalf, not as staff of the court.
